JTWG Security
With the increase of network components, not only the benefits but also the shady sides came to the automation areas. Even though automation networks are different from office IT systems, some dangers are quite similar:
- viruses may infect production devices and cause breakdowns
- DOS or eMail attacks may result in network bandwidth problems
- even "nice" software may interfere with automation protocols and behaviours and inflict casualties
- network administration : control access and authorization is a big task
Goals:
- Risk Evaluation : This starts with an analysis of possible threats that may harm your automation network - although viruses are a well known danger for computers, the automation environment creates a different ground that needs special care. Even a tiny administrative network tool may use too much network bandwidth and cause your network to collapse, which means production loss and financial damage
- Analyse your Network : many IT networks and also automation networks are grown things, not easy to track and understand. Regarding security, it is vital to investigate data flow and define interfaces - this is a basic task to use infrastructure components such as switches to help making your network more secure.
- Create the "automation network security guide" : although we are using many components and techniques from the office IT world, some things are different when we talk about automation networking. We would like to give you a hand when you are planning to make your system more secure.
